They are unwelcome guests in many homes. Silverfish are particularly fond of our kitchens, bathrooms, and other dark, damp places. They feed on various substances, including paper, cotton, sugar, flour, mold, and dead skin cells. While they are entirely harmless- they don't bite humans and don't carry any diseases - their presence isn't always appreciated.

Spread a deterrent in corners to encourage silverfish to vacate

Silverfish can survive without food for up to a year and multiply incredibly quickly. Each day, they can lay up to 20 eggs. They typically create nests in the crevices of bathroom tiles, underneath baseboards, or in seldom-explored cupboards.

Even though silverfish do us no harm, and can be considered useful as they "clean up" remaining debris, not everyone wishes to coexist with them daily. Fortunately, several ways to effectively dissuade them from nesting in our homes exist. One method involves creating an aromatic mix of ground cinnamon and dried rosemary, then sprinkling it in the room corners - a scent which they will find off-putting.

Home traps also prove to be effective. Simply set out a plate or smear a piece of card with a bit of honey. Enticed by the sweet offering, silverfish will be stuck on the sticky surface. However, maintaining cleanliness in the home is the most effective method.

It's not just about deterrents and traps but better prevention

Keeping the floor clean and preventing the accumulation of crumbs or leftover food is important. If possible, try not to dry wet laundry inside your home. Instead, use the balcony or another outside area. Ensure clothes are completely dry before storing them in the wardrobe to avoid creating a damp environment that might attract various pests.

Don't forget about regularly airing rooms. It's worth noting that insects cannot survive in temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius.
