Onboard a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, UH-1Y Venom helicopters were delivered to the Czech Republic. This delivery is part of a significant modernization process that the army of Poland’s southern neighbour is undergoing. What capabilities do the UH-1Y Venom helicopters have?

The Czech Republic is one of the countries moving away from the extensively used Soviet-era equipment. In 2023, it made its final flights with Mi-24 helicopters, which are being replaced by the more modern helicopters manufactured by Bell Helicopter Textron - AH-1Z Viper and the aforementioned UH-1Y Venom.

The Czechs receive UH-1Y Venom helicopters

In this batch from the United States, two UH-1Y Venom helicopters arrived, increasing the total to six helicopters already in service within the army. According to the ongoing contract, they will purchase two more, along with a total of four AH-1Z Vipers.

Moreover, the Czech authorities have secured eight additional helicopters from the UH-1 family from the United States as compensation for their support to Ukraine.

Designed for different tasks, UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper helicopters have varying appearances, performances, and equipment. However, they share as much as 85 percent of their components. This commonality significantly lowers logistics, service, and maintenance requirements. Additionally, it allows for pilot training on the same flight simulator, given the many similarities between the two models.

Main features of the UH-1Y Venom

The UH-1Y Venom is a versatile helicopter. It measures 17.8 metres in length and 4.5 metres in height, with a maximum takeoff weight of around 8,400 kg. It operates with two General Electric T700-GE-401C engines, each producing 1,828 horsepower, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 304 km/h.

Its armament includes two machine guns - 7.62 mm and .50 cal. Additionally, the helicopter is equipped to carry air-to-ground missiles on two underwing stations. The UH-1Y Venom also has capacity for up to 12 individuals - comprising 4 crew members and 8 passengers.

Conversely, the AH-1Z Vipers, which the Czechs are also acquiring, are assault helicopters of the same length. These are armed with a 20 mm cannon and can carry up to six larger missiles, including Hydra 70 rockets or guided Hellfire missiles.
