Tragedy in Thailand
After returning to his hotel, the young man consumed the mushrooms, leading to a severe reaction. Approximately 40 minutes later, foam emerged from his mouth, and the Briton started trembling. He died shortly thereafter.
A spokesperson for the British Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and confirmed that they are receiving support, with authorities maintaining constant contact with local services.
Investigation ongoing
Local authorities are conducting an investigation into the young tourist's death. On 22nd December this year, a raid was carried out on the shop where the deceased and his partner purchased the mushrooms. The sellers of the illegal mushrooms, identified by the woman, have already been arrested. Four people were working at the location. Moreover, seven kilograms (15 pounds) of narcotics were discovered in the shop’s warehouse. The khaosodenglish.com portal reported that each package of the prohibited mushrooms was sold for 500 baht (approximately £11).
Major General Worapong Khamluea stated that the suspects will continue to be interrogated to identify the supplier of the drugs. Possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms is illegal, and their effects are similar to LSD; they can be very dangerous and irreversible. As demonstrated in this tragic example, they can even be fatal.
