Blueberries: A superfood with caution for some individuals

Blueberries are incredibly popular. We're right in the middle of their season. They are a source of fibre and antioxidants, which help detoxify the body and support memory and brain health. However, some people should be cautious.

Scientists from the University of Reading and Peninsula Medical School have shown that flavonoids in blueberries can reduce age-related memory damage and prevent the development of high blood pressure. Despite this, not everyone can consume them. People with allergies, fructose intolerance, or sensitivity to salicylates, as well as those with high potassium levels or kidney diseases, should limit their consumption.

It should also be noted that people with chronic kidney diseases should avoid blueberries due to their high potassium content, which can disrupt heart rhythm.

Similarly, people hypersensitive to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, should also limit their blueberry intake due to salicylates in these berries.

People with fructose intolerance may experience digestive problems such as abdominal pain, bloating, or diarrhoea after consuming them. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor before introducing blueberries into the diet, especially if there are any concerns about allergies or food intolerances.

Although blueberries are rich in numerous nutrients and offer various health benefits, it is essential to adjust their consumption according to individual needs and health conditions.
