Beyond aesthetics: Exploring the underestimated health benefits of intimate hair

Many view waxing intimate areas as a matter of aesthetic necessity. However, not everyone opts for it, which, especially for women, can sometimes be deemed as controversial and unhygienic. Medical professionals though, suggest otherwise, highlighting the advantages of retaining natural hair.

Intimate hair, more benefits than you might think

Hair on our intimate parts safeguards against friction during intercourse and minimises the risk of transmitting bacteria or fungi. These hairs act as our natural protection for the reproductive organs. They thwart impurities and microorganisms that might prove harmful- akin to the functioning of our nose hair and eyelashes. The sebum generated by our hair follicles also has a beneficial effect, impeding bacterial growth, thus protecting us against infections and contaminations.

It is also suggested that intimate hair can boost the quality of your romantic life. This can be attributed to pheromones, which are emitted from our sweat glands. These glands are particularly concentrated in our genital areas. Hair purportedly retains pheromones and can boost sexual attractiveness in a partner's perception.

Should you shave your intimate area?

Do you wonder if you should shave before a gynaecological or urological appointment? Many women contemplate whether a medical examination necessitates prior depilation of the reproductive organs. However, most doctors concur that it's not a requirement and that hair does not impede the examination or hygiene maintenance. The same logic applies before childbirth, except for cesarean sections. Due to the incision line being above the pubic mound during the operation, sometimes shaving becomes necessary.

Interested in learning how to shave your intimate areas safely? It is paramount to use clean razors and tools, and to thoroughly clean the area beforehand. Opt for suitable skin products, ideally containing aloe, to prevent irritation. Always ensure that you're waxing 'with the grain' of the hair. Afterward, cleanse the area thoroughly once more and apply a moisturising cream.
