During the holiday season, when we prepare numerous dishes, including fish, our refrigerator can become a source of unpleasant smells. How can you eliminate them? It's worth using tried and tested methods that can help maintain a neutral scent inside the appliance. A reliable baking product will come in handy, among other solutions.

Why do unpleasant odours develop in the refrigerator?

An unpleasant smell in the refrigerator can result from several factors. It most often arises from storing spoiled or expired food, sometimes unknowingly. Even a small amount of decaying food can contaminate the entire space.

Another reason is leftover food that hasn't been properly sealed before placing it in the fridge. An open salad container or an unwrapped piece of onion can emit strong aromas, mingling with fresh products.

Moisture is another contributor to bad smells. Excessive humidity inside the refrigerator promotes the growth of mould and bacteria, leading to the accumulation of unpleasant odours. Damaged door seals can exacerbate this issue.

A clean refrigerator is essential

The first step is to thoroughly clean the inside of the refrigerator. Remove all items and clean the shelves and walls with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid. Pay special attention to corners where food remnants can accumulate and rot over time.

The next step is to use natural odour absorbers. You can use bicarbonate of soda or baking powder, as these substances absorb unpleasant aromas.

Homemade odour absorber

Bicarbonate of soda is one of the most effective ways to remove unpleasant smells from the refrigerator. Its absorbent properties mean it does an excellent job of neutralising unwanted aromas.

To use this simple trick, just pour 4-5 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into an open container and place it in the refrigerator (you can substitute baking powder for the bicarbonate of soda). A homemade odour absorber will not only eliminate the unpleasant smell but also protect against excessive moisture inside the fridge. You will notice the difference within a few hours.

Another effective method is placing a few pieces of lemon or lime in the refrigerator. Simply put a sliced fruit or just its peel on the fridge shelf. The exceptionally intense citrus aroma will make you sense only its freshness when you open the doors, and the unpleasant odour will disappear almost immediately.
