The German parliament approved the purchase of over 100 Boxer armoured vehicles manufactured in Queensland, Australia, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This agreement is being hailed as the most significant "defence export" deal in Australian history, with the contract valued at one billion Australian dollars (£370 million).
This agreement follows a preliminary deal signed last July during the visit of the Australian Prime Minister to Berlin. "Today's announcement positions Australia's defence industry as a leader in delivering top-tier defence capabilities to our trusted security partner, Germany," stated the Australian Ministry of Defence.
The agreement bolsters Australia's strength
The deal is set to enhance the sovereign Australian defence industry, create local jobs, and stimulate Australia's economic growth, according to Prime Minister Albanese. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Richard Marles views the transaction as pivotal for the bilateral relations between the nations. "The construction and export of Boxer Heavy Weapon Carrier vehicles to the German army signify a strengthening of ties between our countries," he remarked.
Last month, Australia also unveiled plans to build its largest navy since World War II, as reported by the Turkish agency Anadolu. This ambitious project, expected to cost A$7 billion (£4.9 billion), aims to double and modernize the fleet.
