The incident occurred on Saturday at about 19:00 GMT. "Two persons armed with a machete and gas attacked a soldier of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in the area of the 'Selatyn' Air Force base." The incident was reported by Ukrainska Pravda, citing journalist Vitaliy Glagola.

In response to the attack, the border guard used his service weapon. One of the attackers was killed on the spot, and the other was injured and detained. The State Border Guard Service confirmed the incident but did not provide detailed information, citing the interests of the investigation.

Television network TSN reports that the attackers were probably attempting to cross the border illegally.

17 men detained

On Sunday, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine announced the detention of 17 men who attempted to cross into Hungary.

220 yards from the border, the border guards stopped a van carrying the men. It turned out that the passengers were attempting to leave the country illegally, paying between $3,000 and $12,000 for the "journey."
