Anne Hathaway's brave journey to sobriety and its impact on her career
Anne Hathaway has been involved in the film industry for 25 years, earning widespread admiration from audiences and garnering loud titles and at least one major award. In the last month alone, we've seen two productions featuring her. It comes as a surprise, then, that this accomplished actress has long been battling her frustrations with alcohol.

Her first significant role came as the lead in "The Princess Diaries", directed by Garry Marshall. Following this breakout role, Hathaway starred in a succession of acclaimed films, including "Brokeback Mountain" by Ang Lee, "The Devil Wears Prada" by David Frankel, "Love and Other Drugs" by Edward Zwick, "One Day" by Lone Scherfig, and "Les Misérables" by Tom Hooper, which earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Oddly enough, Hathaway’s career hit a lull after reaching such heights. Yet, over the next decade, she found herself far from idle, all while dealing with significant issues related to alcohol.
Anne Hathaway fought addiction: “I usually don't talk about it”
Recently, Hathaway has opened up about personal and professional challenges. In a tell-all interview, she reminisced about her early career and exposed a then-common yet now frowned-upon practice at auditions. A month prior, she shared her experience with a traumatic miscarriage. Today, the actress credits being a mother to her two sons, eight-year-old Jonathan and four-year-old Jack, as a significant factor in overcoming another major hurdle in her life.
In a conversation with "The New York Times," Hathaway disclosed that turning 40 was not the monumental event she had anticipated. What truly marked a turning point for her was maintaining her sobriety. – "I don't normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober. That feels like a milestone to me. 40 feels like a gift," she said. The star has been candid about her struggles with alcohol for some time.
– "I knew deep down it wasn't for me. And it just felt so extreme to have to say, 'But none?' But none. If you're allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don't argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it." she told "Vanity Fair". Ultimately, Hathaway completely abstained from alcohol, which she described as "fuel for sinking".
The latest movie featuring Hathaway, the romantic comedy "The Idea of You" directed by Michael Showalter, will be available on Amazon Prime Video starting Thursday, May 2.
