Amazon faces largest US strike as workers demand better conditions
Amazon employees in seven locations across the United States have commenced a strike, demanding improved working conditions. The Teamsters union organised this action to pressure the company during the busy shopping season.
Amazon employees in New York, Georgia, California, and Illinois have begun a strike demanding higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. The strike, coordinated by the Teamsters union, aims to compel Amazon to enter negotiations and avoid disruptions during the peak shopping season. According to CNBC, the union has given Amazon until Sunday to set negotiation dates. The equivalent UK time for the mentioned deadline must be considered based on the time the information was released.
Teamsters President Sean O'Brien stated in an announcement, "If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon's unrestrained greed."
Amazon accuses the union
Amazon, owned by Jeff Bezos, has responded by accusing the union of misleading the public. The company claims that most protesters are not company employees but outsiders. The company emphasises that it is concentrated on delivering holiday orders.
The Teamsters union claims nearly 10,000 Amazon employees have joined the organisation, which accounts for less than 1 percent of the 1.53 million employed. The Thursday action is the largest strike against Amazon in US history. Efforts to unionise at Amazon began in 2022, when warehouse workers on Staten Island in New York voted to join the union.
