Abrams tanks set for overhaul to tackle battlefield challenges
The USA plans to upgrade Abrams M1A1 tanks, as reported by the Army Recognition portal. The modifications will take into account experiences from the front in Ukraine.
The USA intends to modernise Abrams M1A1 tanks based on its experiences using them in Ukraine. These tanks have recently faced issues related to their vulnerability to modern anti-tank systems, primarily systems like Javelin and Stugna-P. Additionally, the American Abrams M1A1s encountered issues in Ukraine with logistics and high fuel consumption.
The new generation of Abrams
The introduction of a new generation of Abrams in the M1A3 version is planned. These tanks will be more durable, lighter, and more fuel-efficient. The modernisation aims to improve the tanks' lifespan and efficiency, which are crucial for their use on the modern battlefield.
What exactly do the Americans want to improve? The modernisation of the Abrams M1A3 includes:
- Increasing resistance to modern anti-tank systems
- Reducing weight, and consequently reducing fuel consumption
- Improving mobility
Let's recall that the Abrams tanks, delivered by the USA, arrived in Ukraine in the autumn of 2023, enhancing its defensive capabilities in the conflict with Russia. Ukrainian soldiers underwent appropriate training to effectively use these machines on the front line. Thanks to Ukrainians, Americans can now improve their machines, understanding the requirements set for them by the modern battlefield.
American Abrams tanks
The Abrams M1A1 tank is equipped with a 120 mm calibre cannon and two types of machine guns with calibres of 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm. The Ukrainian armed forces appreciate these American tanks for their powerful firepower and advanced fire control system, which are part of their equipment. Despite their weight of about 60 tonnes, these tanks are capable of reaching speeds exceeding 64 km/h (approximately 40 mph) thanks to engines with power reaching 1,500 hp.
