A spotless loo: Harnessing home remedies for hygiene

A clean toilet is a hallmark of any home. However, to maintain it in perfect condition, you need to dedicate some time to properly cleaning it. How can you make the toilet resemble one in a hotel? It's worth using two kitchen items that can tackle those hard-to-reach places.

The toilet is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house. After the kitchen, it is where the most germs congregate. We often don't realise that after flushing the toilet, bacteria can be dispersed up to 1.5 metres high.

Microorganisms settle on our toothbrushes, combs, and towels. Even if we close the toilet lid, it doesn't completely solve the problem. Bacteria can seep through the gaps and continue to spread in our bathroom.

How to clean the toilet?

Toilet cleanliness is not only a matter of aesthetics but also health. One of the crucial components is the toilet bowl. However, maintaining it in perfect condition isn't always straightforward, despite our efforts. The culprits are often streaks and unsightly stains that appear in the bowl.

One of the best solutions is vinegar, which has disinfecting and descaling properties. Vinegar not only works well with the toilet but also removes streaks and scale from the shower or sink. It can be used both on its own and in combination with bicarbonate of soda.

The basic principle is regularity – don't wait until the dirt becomes hard to remove. Perform weekly cleanings to prevent the appearance of scale or rust stains.

Proper tools are crucial during cleaning. The traditional toilet brush often doesn't reach difficult-to-access areas. An ideal solution would be to use an old fork with a kitchen sponge attached. This way, you can easily clean the nooks around the rim of the bowl and other hard-to-reach places.

Homemade toilet cleaning paste

To prepare this cleaning mixture, you need bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, and water. Mix all the ingredients in a 3:2:1 ratio, then apply them to the dirty area. Leave it for at least half an hour, then thoroughly rinse the surface with water. The toilet will shine with cleanliness.
